Do you know the difference between topical and transdermal cannabis products? By understanding the differences between the two you can choose the best cannabis product for your needs.
Topical and transdermal cannabis products are applied to the skin. One of the main functions of the skin is to keep out foreign matter. Therefore, compounds will generally not as easily be absorbed through the skin, unless they have been formulated with specific ingredients that aid in skin penetration.
Topical products work on the surface of the skin and the medication does not reach the bloodstream. This means that a topical product acts locally and for the most part is not intoxicating. On the other hand, transdermal products are able to penetrate the skin and enter the bloodstream, thereby allowing the effects on the whole body through distribution via the bloodstream.
Topical and transdermal products can come in many forms. Topical medications are oil-based and can be creams, ointments, lotions, gels, sprays, and foams. Transdermal medications are alcohol-based and can come in gels, paste, and patches.
