A new study has found that CBD may have the potential to prevent and alleviate Alzheimer’s disease.
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) impacts over 6 million patients in the United States and currently lacks a market-available cure, although there are medications that can provide temporary relief by alleviating symptoms.
AD is a prominent neurodegenerative disorder associated with cognitive and memory deterioration.
But since small-molecule drugs directed at Amyloid beta (Aβ) have been challenged, there is a pressing need for alternative targets.
Neuroinflammation plays a central role in Alzheimer’s pathology, leading to synaptic and neuronal damage, underscoring the importance of addressing inflammation and preserving neuronal integrity.
However, researchers from China Pharmaceutical University in Nanjing discovered that cannabidiol (CBD), a key cannabis compound without intoxicating effects like THC, might enhance cognitive function and potentially offer protection against Aβ42, a protein derived from the amyloid precursor protein, which is a noteworthy biomarker associated with Alzheimer’s disease onset, mild cognitive impairment, vascular dementia, and other cognitive disorders.
The study, recently published in the peer-reviewed journal Cells, delves into the therapeutic potential of CBD in Alzheimer’s disease, seeking to uncover its mechanisms. [Read More @ Forbes]
