In this video Neurosurgeon Dr. John Edwards at Summit Brain, Spine, and Orthopedics details his strategy to help post-operative patients manage surgical pain during the recovery process. It is always important to have a plan in place prior to surgery in order to decrease anxiety and optimize overall health. Our strategy to manage post-operative pain is with a multimodal approach including ice and heat, mindful movements, supportive bracing, and a combination of oral medications. Medications such as Tylenol, non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAID’s), muscle relaxants, and opioids work together to provide the best benefit rather than any one alone. Medical cannabis is a personal decision and may be helpful for some. Acute flare ups can also be treated with steroidal anti-inflammatories.
