A 2022 study by Georgetown Behavioral Hospital, using data from Families Against Fentanyl, reveals that Fentanyl has become the leading cause of death for Americans aged 18-45, surpassing both suicide and COVID-19. Federal data indicates nearly 110,000 people died of drug overdoses in 2022, with Fentanyl responsible for around 75,000 deaths. China is the leading manufacturer of illicit Fentanyl, contributing to its devastating impact in the West.
Another concerning development is the rise of Nitazenes, developed in the 1950s as opioid pain relief but never approved for market. According to the DEA, Nitazenes, primarily sourced from China, are being mixed into drugs like heroin in the United States. Since their first detection in 2019, Nitazenes are now found in various substances in the UK, including cannabis, heroin, and black market pills like Diazepam. Adverse effects, such as reported holes in flesh after consuming medications cut with Nitazenes, highlight the dangers.
The emergence of Nitazenes is linked to the ban on opium manufacture in Afghanistan, leaving a market gap filled by Chinese chemical manufacturing companies. This situation reflects a proxy war, with the West experiencing repercussions reminiscent of what China endured in the 1800s, now manifesting in the form of Fentanyl and Nitazenes.
