Why Medical Marijuana?
What does medical marijuana and holistic health have to do with one another? There was so much stigma around this for years that we as society forgot what it truly is.
Well…marijuana, more correctly cannabis is a plant! It is a natural medicinal herb that has been used as an amazing healing medicinal herb by healers for thousands of years. But I will be honest, when I first started hearing about the medical marijuana program as a physician 3 years ago I was very skeptical. I was brainwashed just like everyone else to believe that it’s just like any addictive drug and it’s all bad and has absolutely zero positive effects, and that it’s an exit drug that will lead to other dangerous addictions. This all changed when, by strong and persistent advice of my husband, I took the Florida Department of health Medical Marijuana registry certification course.
I could not believe my eyes what I was reading. It stated that Cannabis was part of American doctor’s pharmacopeia for years, that American Medical Association and physicians used cannabis plant as a potent treatment option for many different ailments. That was until 1937 when the Marijuana Tax act was created and big companies lobbied against hemp and cannabis products due to the fear of competition. Slowly over time there was propaganda spread out in movies, magazines, news and newspapers about the harm of cannabis putting fear into the public’s mind and creating so much stigma around it. Remember the “Reefer madness”? With all this stigma, physicians stopped using it as a treatment option. The whole thing was successfully forgotten due to elimination of cannabis education from doctor’s training.
Fast forward to 1964 when Raphael Mechoulam a scientist in Israel started researching cannabis and found the molecule of THC. Medicinal properties of that and the CBD were discovered over time. Also a very important finding was the Endocannabinoid system. It’s a huge receptor system in our body that responds to our internal (endocannabinoid) molecules that look just like those of cannabis, the plant. If you want to learn more about this topic I go much more into detail in one of my medical marijuana workshops.
Basically, cannabis plant and it’s ingredients (i.e cannabinoids) are one of nature’s most amazing anti-inflammatories and the safety profile of cannabis is so much better than pretty much of ANY other synthetic medication. As we discussed in Video #2, inflammation is the culprit of most chronic illness so by using cannabis and decreasing the inflammation we are doing a lot of good for the body. In addition to the anti-inflammatory effects by rebalancing our endocannabinoid system we are working on the entire homeostasis of the body.
Florida’s ammendment 2 passed in November 2016 legalizing medical marijuana in the state. Since then the program grew and improved over time.
