Last Friday I spoke at Radicle Femmes on a panel about cannabis brand building and marketing. An audience member asked me “how do you deal with hate on social media?” This was my answer. Well, part of it.
The context is that I shared a few recent experiences where I received comments and direct messages hating on me for being Chinese. I also received messages with derogatory words like ch**k and c**t 
Being a creator, it is impossible to avoid the hate. But what’s important, is how you handle it and not let it impact you. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t get upset. Even though I don’t respond and just block the sender, it still impacts me because I’ve come across it. But I also don’t want to be angry, because it is a waste of my precious energy that could be spent on people and things that are actually worth my time.
Everyday, I have to remind myself of all the positive people that have joined the cannabinista community. And thankfully, 90% of the comments I get are positive and supportive, and those are the people I choose to give my energy towards.
You definitely have to have thick skin to be a creator. You’re constantly inundated with disgusting comments, but you just gotta brush it off and focus on the good. Find the good people, and surround yourself with them. Good energy attracts good energy
