Happy 4/20! Today I bring you something a little bit different. Weed has been a heavily debated topic in the past few decades. In fact just a few years ago many believed that weed was among the worst kinds of drugs. And yet today millions of Americans use weed in some form everyday. In fact, cannabis is actually an underrated part of our history. Not only have the psychoactive effects of cannabis been used across multiple religions as a source of trances and other experiences but hemp, a cannabis product, was arguably one of the most important natural resources in the world for a span of a few centuries. From Neolithic farmers in China to American troops in World War Two, hemp was an essential product that facilitated activities all the way from hunting to sailing. Today we attempt to trace that history. Starting in Neolithic Asia we will follow the course of cannabis history all the way to the modern day. So why was cannabis so important in human history? How did it spread across the world? And why did it become so controversial? Let’s talk about it.
