Step-by-Step Guide to Creating Your Infusions
Decarboxylation: Activating Your Cannabis
The first step in any cannabis infusion is decarboxylation, commonly known as “decarbing.” This process involves heating cannabis to activate the compounds within it, transforming THCA into THC, which is necessary for the psychoactive effects in edibles. Here’s how you can decarb using the Mason Pot kit:
Preheat your oven to 240°F (115°C). This is the optimal temperature for decarboxylation.
Prepare your cannabis. If you’re using flower, you can grind it or break it by hand. Today, we’re using an ounce of shake from the strain Grape Cream.
Distribute the cannabis evenly among the jars. Since I don’t have a scale handy, I’m eyeballing it to distribute it evenly across three jars.
Infusion: Adding the Oils
After decarboxylation, it’s time to add your oils or butter to the activated cannabis:
Choose your infusion base. You can use olive oil, MCT oil, or clarified butter. Today, we’ll use one cup of olive oil in one jar, a half cup of MCT oil in another for a potent tincture, and a stick of butter in the last jar.
Ensure the cannabis is fully submerged in the oil or melted butter to guarantee a thorough infusion.
The Infusion Process
Set your oven to 190-220°F (104°C). Place the jars in the oven and set a timer for two hours. This temperature and time frame are ideal for infusing without degrading the quality of the THC.
Stir halfway through. Although not necessary, giving your jars a gentle swirl halfway through can help mix the contents for a more even infusion.
Straining: Separating Solids from Liquids
Once your infusion is complete, it’s time to separate the solids from the liquids:
**Use the Mason Pot Press and Fine Strainer. ** This combination ensures you extract every potent drop of your infusion without any unwanted plant material.
Press each infusion. Start with the olive oil, using the press to squeeze out the oil through the fine strainer. Repeat the process for the MCT oil and the butter.
Store properly. Transfer the strained infusions into clean jars or bottles. If using the tincture bottle included in the OG bundle, it’s perfect for the MCT oil infusion.
Calculating Potency
Understanding the potency of your homemade infusions is crucial for dosing:
Calculate total THC. For example, with one ounce of flower at 29% THC, you have approximately 8,120 mg of THC in total.
Divide by the number of infusions. If you’ve created three different infusions, each one will roughly contain about 2,700 mg of THC.
This calculation helps you understand how much THC is in each type of infusion, allowing you to dose effectively and safely.
Conclusion: The Benefits of DIY Infusions
Creating your own cannabis infusions at home is not only cost-effective but also allows you to customize the potency and type of oil or butter used. With the Mason Pot OG bundle, the process is simplified, making it accessible even for beginners. Whether you’re preparing edibles, tinctures, or topical applications, the control over ingredients ensures that you’re creating a product that suits your needs and preferences.
Remember, always start with a small dose to gauge its effect, especially if you are new to cannabis edibles. Enjoy the process and the satisfaction of creating something truly tailored to your taste and therapeutic needs!
Happy infusing, and welcome to the Family!
