By now, everyone has heard of CBD, or cannabidiol. Its effect on the human body has been well documented, but did you know that there are over 100 cannabinoids found in hemp?
One of them, CBG, or cannabigerol, is starting to garner a lot of attention for its special benefits.
But what is CBG and how is it made?
CBG is typically produced at very low levels in the cannabis plant, often around 1%. Another cannabinoid, CBGA or cannabigerolic acid plays a vital role in the creation of cannabinoids.
CBGA is the acidic version of CBG and is known as the mother of all cannabinoids because it is the precursor to tetrahydrocannabinolic acid, THCA, cannabidiolic acid, CBDA, and CBCA.
Major enzymes break down CBGA and direct it to one of the three main cannabinoid lines: THCA, CBDA, CBCA. From there, with the introduction of ultraviolet light or heat, they primarily become THC and CBD.
The main difference in marijuana vs hemp is the THC content. Hemp contains less than .3% THC by dry weight, whereas marijuana could contain up to 30% THC content.
While both could produce high levels of CBD, federal laws state that any hemp or hemp-products must come from plants that contain no more than .3% THC.
