As I take a leisurely stroll through my garden in this crisp autumn air, I’m met with a mosaic of nature’s artwork – a canvas painted with fading lavenders, wilting canna lilies, and jasmine petals drifting gently to the ground. The magnolia, once proud and vibrant, now sheds its leaves, embracing the change of seasons.
But amid this quiet farewell to summer, the garden tells a story of resilience and transformation. The crabapple tree stands tall, adorned with jewel-like fruits in shades of ruby. Nearby, the Rhus typhina, also known as stag’s horn sumach, proudly displays its fiery red , yellow and green foliage, as if setting the garden ablaze with its vibrant hues. And the Cotinus coggygria, or smoke bush, creates a smoky, ethereal ambiance with its leaves as they begin to fade.
This moment in the garden marks a perfect juncture, a reflective pause in time where I can observe what worked well and what can be improved for the upcoming year. The withering foliage offer insights into the garden’s changing needs, prompting thoughts of new plantings and design adjustments. Their faded elegance is a reminder of natural beauty, inspiring me to cherish every moment of vitality in the garden.
As I walk, I mentally rearrange the landscape, envisioning the next season’s blooms and colours. The lessons from these fading plants become the foundation for future garden endeavours. The autumn garden, with its juxtaposition of fading and flourishing, teaches patience, resilience, and the importance of adapting to change.
In every wilting petal and every burst of autumnal colour, there is a lesson – a testament to the cyclical nature of life and the endless possibilities that each season brings. This garden walk becomes not just a stroll through the withering blooms, but a journey of inspiration, a canvas upon which I can paint a new vision for the garden’s future.
So, with a heart filled with gratitude for the beauty that was and anticipation for the beauty yet to come, I continue my autumn garden walk, embracing the transformative power of nature and the endless wonders it has to offer.
Thank you for your time with me.
