Here’s a lil 40+ mins waffle where I express some personal thoughts on addiction and drugs. Of course these are quite ‘taboo’ topics but I think more conversation is very much necessary hence why I am bearing my naked soul to da world.
Addiction is less about the drug itself but more the coping mechanisms that one uses to soften the stresses of life. Our modern social arrangements seem to impose significant stress upon people, which can precipitate addictive coping mechanisms. (See Gabor Mate’s “The Myth of Normal” for a more in depth exploration of the ways in which sociological trauma manifests in our modern world)
Often people engaging in such coping mechanisms are shamed and dehumanised – which is something that I want to call attention to – hopefully to encourage a more compassionate attitude towards drug users and people suffering from drug addiction.
As Gabor Mate frequently remarks, we should be asking not “why the addiction?”, but rather “why the pain?”
I understand that the views expressed here may be controversial and provocative. As always, I am not attached to any particular view or belief – the pursuit of ‘truth’ is a constant state of error-correction so I most certainly will disagree with some of the stuff I say here as I learn more in the future.
