Eloise Theisen, RN AGPCNP-BC presents “Using Cannabis to Treat Chronic Pain in the Geriatric Population” at CannMed 2019.
Cannabis use among seniors is rising, as seniors are looking for relief from chronic pain, anxiety, sleep, and depression. As the science on cannabis emerges, seniors are becoming more interested in using cannabis in addition to or to replace their prescription medications. Unfortunately for many seniors, their first contact with cannabis is at a dispensary, where the product choices are confusing—sometimes bewildering—and the information and advice occasionally dubious. Without the proper guidance and information—the success rates for seniors trying cannabis for the first time can be low. Working with a qualified advance practice nurse can help seniors identify the right cannabinoid, route, and frequency, can help seniors identify potential drug-drug interactions, and can help them avoid side effects. The presentation will feature key findings related to cannabis use in the geriatric population including trends, outcomes, and implications for research.
