LIVE: US, South Korea Push Forward with Joint Military Drills Defying North Korea’s Threat
US and South Korean troops concluded their annual joint military exercise, “Freedom Shield,” on Thursday, March 14, with combined live-fire drills. This 11-day joint military exercise aimed at deterring North Korea’s threats. These drills began on March 4 and were the first to take place since Pyongyang ended a 2018 agreement with Seoul to reduce tensions. The live-fire exercise involved showcasing drones, tanks, and armoured vehicles.
Around 300 South Korean and about 30 US soldiers participated in the joint military drills. This exercise coincides with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un overseeing a military display involving a new battle tank. North Korea views these joint military exercises as preparation for war whereas, South Korea portrays these drills to be solely defensive.
