What You’ll Need
Before we get started, let’s go over the essentials. The Mason Pot kit includes several key components:
Mason Pot Jar and Lid: The main vessel for your infusion.
Mason Puck and Press: This tool is crucial for pressing out every last drop of your infusion.
Thermometer: To precisely control the temperature during the infusion process.
Fine Strainer: For those who appreciate a smooth, fine quality in their infusions.
Microfiber Kitchen Towel: Your dedicated infusion towel!
Additionally, you’ll need:
Herb/ Cannabis (we used a half ounce of popcorn-sized nugs) You can also use ground cannabis, trim, shake, already vaped weed, rosin chips and more.
Coconut oil
First things first, let’s prepare the cannabis. If you’re using larger buds, it’s a good idea to grind/break them down to increase the surface area, which can help in extracting more cannabinoids. However, for our session, we used popcorn-sized nugs, which are small enough to use directly.
Open your Mason Pot Jar: Remove the lid and place your cannabis inside.
Check the Viewing Window: The Mason Pot has a convenient cut-out on the back side, allowing you to see exactly what you’re infusing.
Decarboxylation: Activating the THC
Decarboxylation is a crucial step in making any cannabis infusion. This process involves heating the cannabis to convert the non-psychoactive THCA into psychoactive THC.
Preheat Your Oven: Set your oven to 240°F (115°C).
Insert the Thermometer: Place the thermometer inside the jar to monitor the temperature closely.
Heat the Cannabis: Place the jar in the oven and heat it for 40 minutes. This will activate the THC, making it ready for infusion.
Infusing the Coconut Oil
Once your cannabis is decarboxylated, it’s time to add the coconut oil.
Add Coconut Oil: After the cannabis has been heated, add enough coconut oil to cover the cannabis. We used one cup for our half ounce of cannabis.
Mix and Heat: Return the jar to the oven, now set at 190-220°F (104°C). Heat the mixture for two hours, giving it a gentle swirl halfway through to ensure even infusion.
Pressing and Straining
After the infusion time is up, it’s time to separate the oil from the plant material.
Set Up for Pressing: Place the Mason Puck inside the jar on top of the infused mixture.
Press: Use the press component to squeeze out the oil, ensuring you extract every potent drop.
Strain: Pour the mixture through the fine strainer into another container to remove any remaining plant particles. This step guarantees a smooth, clean oil that’s ready for use.
Utilizing Your Infused Coconut Oil
Now that you have your infused coconut oil, the possibilities are endless! Here are a few ideas on how to use it:
Cooking and Baking: Substitute regular coconut oil with your infused oil in recipes.
Morning Coffee or Tea: Stir a small amount into your morning beverage for a relaxing start to the day.
Topical Application: Use it as a base for homemade cannabis-infused creams or balms.
Tips for Success
Temperature Control: Keeping an eye on the temperature with the thermometer is crucial. Too high temperatures can degrade the THC, reducing the potency of your infusion.
Quality of Cannabis: The better the quality of your starting material, the better the infusion. Fresh, properly cured cannabis will provide the best results.
Storage: Store your infused coconut oil in a cool, dark place to preserve its potency and freshness.
